California is 423,970 km 2 , Italy is 301,338 km 2 . Not three times bigger (dunno from where it came), but is much bigger indeed.

Well, incase you're not actually looking at the image, overlay Italy's silhouette over California. there's a massive segment that italy doesn't have.
